The need for visibility of study recruitment and data management performance is increasing as the need for data driven decisions increases.
Standard reporting dashboards, KPIs and reporting metrics need to be developed along with the necessary tools to facilitate this in an easy to use interface.
The experience of using a web-based open source reporting service (OSRS) report dashboard will be developed. This will include study recruitment information, data management performance and laboratory management performance. Each generated chart can be saved in image or .pdf format for further reporting needs. The technical aspects of the platform used will be detailed alongside a user guide so that users can generate and host a similar system for their projects.
Workpackage
The OSRS is a web based reporting package dedicated for clinical research study in dashboard format to show the visibility of the study. Currently, the development of the OSRS is specific for StopMip Indonesia study (a malaria clinical trial research in Indonesia). This package is developed with .php and .html programming, Highchart plugin (Javascript) to build chart/graph, MySQL as database source, and XAMPP as web server. The database content is the data summary/defined views from main database. The values of the OSRS data summary will be updated alongside with the update of main database or with specific user-defined time. For security reason, a user login authentication will be included in the system as well. To run the OSRS, a computer server or dedicated standard PC with certain minimum requirements is needed. Internet access is also needed in to run Highchart plugin properly.
Scope of the workpackage
The scope of this work package includes general information of StopMip Indonesia standard reporting (number of screening, enrolment, end of study, etc), data management performance (time taken from data collection and entered to main database, which variables and number of most common values of discrepancies, time taken for raised discrepancies issues to be clarified), laboratory management performance (number of samples taken from participants, number of samples sent to main laboratory for analysis, number of samples processed, number of analysed samples, etc). Each generated chart can be saved in image or .pdf format for further reporting needs.
Recommendations from the group
The current dashboard is developed specifically for a clinical trial in Indonesia. The scope does not include specifying what standard study reports, data management metrics or KPIs should be created. Also not included in the scope is a review of other reporting tools available such as SSRS, Tableau or Qlik.
Future work
Standardized KPIs should be developed specific for clinical research study. And also, standardized database and its contents (table structure, view, etc) should be standardized as well. Beside of that, improvement for the efficiency and effectivity of OSRS system design must be considered to make OSRS can be reproducible for many types of clinical research purpose. Added feature, such as data review component, also can help to improve for standardization OSRS.
